Turmeric, a spice used in Curry may be beneficial for those suffering from inflammatory intestinal diseases, according to a group of researchers at the Hamamatsu University School of Medicine in Japan. Turmeric contains curcurmin an anti-inflammatory agent that has already shown medicinal properties in wound healing and neurological diseases.
In animal studies, the investigators found that a diet rich in curcurmin improved cases of colitis. The effects were both preventive and therapeutic says lead author Dr. Ken Sugimoto. The results were presented at the annual Digestive Disease Conference.
